Originally designed by Mitsubishi Motor Company the Dodge Stealth is an Americanized version of the Mitsubishi 3000GT. Chrysler wanted to compete with the Japanese cars such as the Nissan 300Z cars and Toyota's MR-2 but did not want to spend the money on their own research and development and manufacturing. So Mitsubishi changed some of the body panels and badging and Chrysler sold them as the Dodge Stealth line. The GT is for Grand Turisimo or Grand Touring meant as a personal touring car with plenty of room for luggage with the tiny back seats folded down. At this point it is a two seater hatchback. Since it came in a couple of drive choices (FWD and AWD) and intake packages (Fuel Injected, Turbo Charged, Twin Turbo Charged)you could choose performance along with the touring qualities of the car. Well that's my take anyway. (my '93 Dodge Stealth has Mitsubishi Motor Co. prominently displayed on the firewall)
